As some or most have seen or read, I have started to incorporate images/animations to coincide with new upcoming gaming releases for the month it releases as mentioned here.
With Halo 3's hype and release for the Microsoft Xbox 360 which has come and gone, its time to change the banner to something new that we all can hype up, scream and talk about.
I present to you....Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock!
So if you're interested in contributing your own banner...take a look at the link I provided above which has a templated included. Flash and GIF files are welcome so let your imagination run free!

It seems Sony is taking a lesson from the homebrew scene. The latest revision of the PSP firmware (3.71) included the feature of custom XMB themes. To help make customization easier Sony released a tool which allows you to create your own custom theme. The theme will work on the both the official firmware and M33's custom firmware. Simply place the .ptf file into ms0:/PSP/THEME and select it from the theme settings menu. A manual is included for those with little to no experience making themes. Credit goes to zmcnulty for translating the manual into English.

A Harmonix representative has confirmed the US retail price and release date for their upcoming Rock Band game.
Online retailer Amazon.com recently changed the listing of the game to reflect a price of USD 169.99 [£83] for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, with a release date of November 23. According to a GameSpot story, a Harmonix representative confirmed that Amazon's information was correct.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 bundles include a wired drum kit, guitar, and microphone along with a copy of the game. The 360 Stratocaster guitar controller will be wired, and the bundle will include a USB hub. The PS3 Stratocaster guitar will be wireless.
The PS2 version will sell for USD 159.99, and won't be available until December 10 according to the Harmonix spokesperson. The game and instruments will also be sold separately.
Calls to Harmonix were not immediately returned.
UPDATE: An EA public relations manager has confirmed that the date and price were reported correctly. No word yet on an official UK release date or price.

Shares for Sony Corporation's subsidiary, Sony Financial Holdings Inc, went on sale in Japan today, with a total of 800,000 shares traded at a price of JPY 400,000 (GBP 1692, USD 3462) each.
That's the top line in a possible range, the lowest price of which was JPY 380,000 (GBP 1608, USD 3289) each, demonstrating demand for what was on its announcement initially received with limited interest.
Following a pre-offering cut from JPY 415,000 (GBP 1756, USD 3592) the shares raised JPY 320 billion (GBP 1.35 billion, USD 2.77 billion) with the proceeds thought to be heading towards the corporation's electronics division
Specifically that means a boost for the manufacture of Bravia televisions, and help for the PlayStation department as well - a move which was previously thought to have been indicative of an impending price cut for the PlayStation 3.
However, no such news was forthcoming at Sony's price-related announcement event, the Tokyo Games Show.

Ultima creator and current NCsoft exec Richard Garriott is to take a "commercially active" mission to the International Space Station.
Scheduled for October 2008, Garriott's trip will be the first commercial mission to take place on-board the ISS. Although exact details are still under wraps, mission organiser Space Adventures detailed that private sector involvement can include scientific and environmental research and educational outreach programming.
Garriott is currently working on MMO Tabula Rasa for NCsoft, due to be released before the end of the year.
"I am dedicating my space flight to science," commented Garriott.
"It is my goal to devote a significant amount of my time aboard the space station to science, engineering and educational projects."
Garriott's father was an astronaut, and his own commercial success with the Ultima series of games has enabled him to be able to take the space flight.
"The reality that's brought me here intersects with the simulated, fantasy worlds I've created in my career as a computer game programmer," added Garriott.
"Without the success I've enjoyed as the creator of the Ultima series of games, I wouldn't have had the resources to be one of the first private space pioneers."

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has admitted the company will not be able to meet consumer demand for the Wii this Christmas.
Speaking frankly to the Mercury News, Fils-Aime said that for a second year running the home console is likely to be sparse on store shelves, with current supplies lasting no longer than a day before selling out.
"We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record that we won't," he said.
"What I can tell you is that typically, our inventory is lasting a day... I don't think we will know when supply crosses with demand until after the holiday season," he said.
According to Fils-Aime, the problem isn't in manufacturing the consoles, but the sheer aggressive demand for the machine.
"The issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on," he added.
Only last month Fils-Aime promised an "unprecedented" amount of Wii consoles for the Christmas season following further sales success throughout the year.

Nintendo has finally officially confirmed that Neo Geo games will be available on the Virtual Console.
They will cost 900 points, and are likely to appear "soon", although a solid date is still to be determined.
The Neo Geo was a strange old beast made by Japanese company SNK. It boasted impressive technical prowess compared to its 1990 competition, but entered the market at such a high price point and asked for so much money for its games that it soon receded to niche, cult status.
Still, it had its moments and is remembered fondly for The King of Fighters and Metal Slug series among others.
The first titles to pop up on the Virtual Console will be Fatal Fury, World Heroes and Art of Fighting, with many more to follow in the future.
We will let you know when a date hits the airwaves.

Bungie has responded to claims that Halo 3 doesn't run in a high-definition resolution by saying saying it's "practically impossible to discern the difference".
The developer confirmed the lower 1152 x 640 resolution on its website, but went on to clarify that it used two frame buffers to create its final image - an unorthodox technique used to improve dynamic lighting range. Obviously.
"This ability to display a full range of HDR, combined with our advanced lighting, material and postprocessing engine, gives our scenes, large and small, a compelling, convincing and ultimately 'real' feeling, and at a steady and smooth frame rate, which in the end was far more important to us than the ability to display a few extra pixels," reckons Bungie.
"In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it's practically impossible to discern the difference. We would ignore it entirely were it not for the Internet's propensity for drama where none exists.
"In fact the reason we haven't mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings."
Halo 3 was released last week on 360, smashing sales records and receiving high scores across the board - especially from us, earning the much coveted 10/10.

Can't get a Wii? How about getting a 'Vii' from China instead? We're sure it's just as good.
The world-renowned masters of piracy in China have produced a console that shamelessly seeks to pilfer some of the popularity of Nintendo's motion-controlled beauty.
The ingeniously-named 'Vii' not only steals the aesthetics of Nintendo's console, but it's controlled with a blatant replica of the Wii Remote, too.
It looks motion controlled in some way (which is surprising), but the games, which can just about be made out in the image below (courtesy of Engadget), are sure to be complete rubbish (or as good as Mario Galaxy - who knows?).
We still want one though, just for the comedy value.

The dream is slowly fading for anyone who's still hoping that persistent rumours of Sonic appearing in Smash Bros. Brawl were true. As the game's launch approaches he's still nowhere to be seen...
A new character has been unveiled today, but it's not the blue-spike hedgehog. It's a much less known character (on this side of the planet anyway) called Lucas; a young boy with psychic boy from the Japan-only Nintendo classic, Mother 3.
"While he is timid in nature, he fights splendidly. Is it possible he can surpass even Ness," says Nintendo.
But as the American release of the game draws nearer, and with the unveiling of a hedgehog-less box art (also below), it's looking increasingly unlikely that Sega's mascot is going to show up.

Deadline Games' CEO Chris Mottes believes that developers and publishers have a duty to invest in and support outsourcing companies, rather than taking advantage of cheap labour for quick rewards.
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz Mottes said that it's not only important to help the industry grow, but it's also a socially responsible move that shows maturity for a relatively young business.
"My philosophy on outsourcing in general is a little different than others in that, in our experience at least, particular if we are looking for cost savings in outsourcing, it is very difficult to ensure that the quality you are going to get through the whole production is going to be consistent," commented Mottes.
"If there is a sweatshop mentality just to do the cheapest possible product, that is going to boomerang and hit us in the back of the neck eventually.
"If the staff is just being whipped through to produce assets at as high a rate as possible, then they don't really put their soul into what they are doing, and that is never going to give you a good result on any product anyway. Clearly, it is a mixture of commercial and social interests that I feel go hand-in-hand," he said.
Deadline Games, developers of Total Overdose and its PSP spin-off Chill Con Carnage, intends to invest in outsourcing companies to help guide studios to create stronger material and also advance staff training for future projects.
"The way I would like to approach it is to partner, or even have some sort of ownership of, the companies down there - because with the right set-up they can be nurtured to become full production houses," detailed Mottes.
"But in terms of outsourcing, I believe it is more long-sighted to work with "insourcing" where you can actually control the quality level of the production…of the work that you are going to get by having a stake in that company. But you can also do something which is more important - you can invest in the employees," he said.
The full interview with Chris Mottes can be read on GamesIndustry.biz today.

A review of Super Mario Galaxy that cropped up in Belgian magazine 'Gunk' is far from what it seems and was not done using a final copy of the game, Nintendo has told CVG.
They gave Mario's next quest 92 percent in what would have been the world exclusive review, which spans just a single page and isn't even shouted about on the cover.
Why such a short review for the most anticipated Wii game yet? Probably because they've only played the short E3 demo, like the rest of us.
"It is 100 percent not a review", a Nintendo spokesman told us, who went on to confirm that "no one in the world will have access to final game code until October 10 at the earliest."

Bungie has hidden secret Ninja Gaiden items in Halo 3, and here are the first shots of them in the flesh.
Players who've already put too many hours into Halo 3 are running around wearing a Hayabusa-style helmet with a ninja sword on their backs. And it's causing a storm in the forums...
The sword isn't a usable weapon - so don't get too excited - but it looks cool. And all you have to do to get it is earn all 1000 Achievement Points. So that means you need to locate all the near-impossible-to-find skulls and the helmet is yours too. Easy that!
Maybe this is why we hear loads of people asking other gamers to help them get multiplayer achievement points BY CHEATING? Shame on all of you! Getting the Overkill achievement will happen in its own good time...

Angry with Apple over the absolute lockdown of the iPhone? You're not alone. Angry enough to start a lawsuit over it? You're probably in a far smaller group entirely, which now includes a number of rabble-rousers on Apple's forums, whose comment threads were killed shortly after beginning discussions of calling for a class action suit against Apple. (Really though, what'd they expect?)
There's no question that users want some retribution for the sorry, sometimes even bricked state the iPhone's now in, but big talk is infinitely smaller than even minor action, so until some brave (or publicity hungry) individuals step up to the plate to test legality of disabling hacked features on personal electronics, it sounds like we'll all just have to be content with our $100 refunds or reduced-price purchases until this thing works itself out.

Sega's soon to beef up Phantasy Star Universe on PC, Xbox 360 and PS2 with expansion Ambition of the Illuminus - which you can clap eyes on in these 27 screenshots.
Here's the scoop on the plotline: "A new Human Fundamentalist movement, known as the Illuminus, disrupts the peaceful Gurhal System throwing the Gurhal Government into chaos.
"Using their custom-made Guardian, players will explore exciting new levels, such as the Ruins of Old Rozenom City and the subterranean Granigs Mines, where they will encounter new and more powerful enemy types, as well as mastering additional versatile class types."
On top of that, the expansion introduces improvements to the game's lobby area and the likes of new customisation options for both characters and weapons.

Earlier this year, we heard that NASA gurus were working up a biological nanobattery that utilized ferritin, and now another report is suggesting that the substance could even be used in a "biotech-based process for creating ultrathin computer memory."
Reportedly, the researchers have found that by using ferritin, metal memory cells could be arranged on substrates sans heat, which consequently allows for thinner substrate materials to be used. The method could eventually lead to "computers being built on thin films that could then be integrated into eyeglass lenses or into clothing," which could add a whole new dimension to wearable electronics.

Armed with laser batteries, Yamato cannon and plasma torpedoes, the Battlecruiser's a "virtual flying fortresses, built to keep the peace and dominate the space lanes of the Koprulu sector" and Blizzard adds that "these imposing vessels are among the most powerful to be found in terran space."
The developer's gone on to flesh out the unit's background and, in addition to releasing the screenshots we're showing here there's a couple of Battlecruiser movies to be seen on the official StarCraft II website.

If you have fallen a little short of the $50 million price tag for a Poseidon 180, fret not, the Jelly-fish 45 Habitat will set you back only a mere $2.5 million. Bargain! Designed by Giancarlo Zema, the "floating dwelling" comprises five separate levels all connected by a snazzy spiral staircase.

The floors are split into cheesy zone-titled areas including study, night, day, guest and viewing quarters. Though, if you purchase the floating mansion, you may abide by whichever nomenclature you wish. The viewpoint stretches 3m below the surface and looks jellyfish-like fantastic. The colossal seat-in-the-sea stands 10m high and 15m wide. Now, if I manage to roll out one hundred posts in 24 hours, Blam promises me a tour of his Jelly-fish 45 Habitat—game on!

Petroglyph's PC version of its RTS Universe at War: Earth Assault has been delayed.
Originally the game was due out on November 2 for PC, but it's now been pushed back to January 2008
"The new release date means that both the PC version and Xbox 360 version will launch closer together, allowing gamers to enjoy the full experience of this fantastic RTS from acclaimed developer, Petroglyph", a Sega rep told us.
Universe at War: Earth Assault features a good old-fashioned alien invasion of Earth scenario, and it's only the first instalment in a series that Petroglyph plans.
"At this point, if you looked at the first Universe at War game as the initial chapter in an ongoing saga, there are at least two more chapters of material we've got fleshed out... and a whole bunch of directions we can go in after that," the developer told us in an interview earlier in the year.
The game was the first third-party title announced to support cross-platform play between PC and Xbox 360.

While we're still hard at work on XNA Game Studio 2.0 we've managed to also bring you a new round of content on http://creators.xna.com for the month of September!
Samples
Collision with a Heightmap
This sample demonstrates how to move objects along a heightmap, useful when creating a game that requires interaction between moving objects and terrain. It is based on the Generated Geometry sample, which creates a landscape from a bitmap.
Custom Model Class
This sample shows how to go beyond the limits of the Model class that comes built in to the XNA Framework, loading geometry data into a custom class that can be extended more easily to cope with specialized requirements.
Mesh Instancing
This sample shows how to efficiently render many copies of the same model, using GPU instancing techniques to reduce the cost of repeated draw calls.
Shatter
This sample shows how you can apply an effect on any model in your game to shatter it apart.
Utilities
Curve Editor
This utility provides an easy-to-use visual editor for creating curves for use with the XNA Framework Curve class. The curve control used to display and edit curves inside the editor can also be imported into your own applications.
Input Reporter
This utility displays input data for all controllers connected to the system. The utility supports multiple controller types, including flight sticks, dance pads, and guitars.
Xbox 360 Controller Button Glyphs
This utility is a set of images that represent the buttons, thumbsticks, and triggers on the Xbox 360 Controller.

Tmbinc released the initial version of his linux 'gpu' library for Xbox360 on x226.org:
Triangles on the 360, MANY OF THEM - about 40 million per second, or even more if you write clever code. (But this is not a depth of field, just a blurry screenshot
I finally polished my GPU stuff far enough so I can risk a release. You need to compile your shaders, so you need Tser's shader compiler (which uses part of the windows XNA libraries).
So, without further words: gpu-0.0.3.tar.gz and romextract-0.0.1.tar.gz (to extract the required ucodes from flash). Have fun!
Ok, some further words: I didn't implemented any standard API yet, right now, the functions are on a very low level, directly above the hardware. Just take a look at gpu.c, and try to understand the example code. Then you should be able to do something more.
You might also be interested in xenkit, which is based on gpu, and adds X11 support and some demos.

One anonymous respectable industry veteran told GameDaily BIZ that his company has been referring to the PS3 as the 'PS3DO' for some time now. The 3DO, introduced by EA founder Trip Hawkins back in 1993, sported cutting-edge tech for its time. A steep price ($699) and a lack of any real "killer apps" didn't allow the platform to live out the 32-bit era, however. By 1996 it was officially dead. 3DO's marketing even promoted the platform not as a video game console but more as a high-end audio/visual product. Sound familiar?
But is the comparison to 3DO fair? David Cole of market research firm DFC Intelligence certainly doesn't think so.
"I don't think there is any comparison at all to the PS3 and 3DO," he said. "The main argument would be that they were both priced high at launch. But 3DO was a startup company with a different business model to license their platform to hardware manufacturers who could really have cared less about promoting the platform. They also didn't have software support and thus they didn't have games to drive the platform. With no games, a shoestring marketing budget and no consumer base to start with it sold less than a million units in the time it was on the market."
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter agrees. "It's a pretty stupid (and unfair) comparison," he said. "3DO was a new platform, no brand ID, not compatible with legacy software, and with no first or third party support. The PS3 has a great brand, a loyal customer base, is generally backward compatible, has a ton of third party support, and an ever-increasing number of good first party titles. I hope the industry veteran was kidding. If he was serious, he's a fool."

Kaltorak has just released a nice game for our PSP's. It's based on the very popular puzzle game Sokoban: we must place all barrels on the red squares. Its quite adictive, and we can enjoy a pseudo 3D enviroment.
The author has just promised a new version that will be released in the next few days, with A LOT OF new levels, music, and much more.
Just place the zip content into the root of your Memory Stick.
Note: You will need the recent kernel 1.50 patch to be able to use it in CF 3.71 M33 (only "normal" PSP). This is not still a PSP Slim compatible game.

The BBFC has announced the launch of Parents BBFC, a new website designed to help parents decide which videogames and films are suitable for their children.
"This website will take the guess work out of the family outing to the cinema and open up the world of videogames for those who don't know their PSP from their Wii,” said BBFC director David Cooke.
Although the BBFC's primary focus is the rating of films, videogame publishers are required to submit games for classification if the games contain specified sexual or violent content. Most videogames without mature content use the European PEGI ratings system, although some publishers are starting to use the BBFC system even when they are not required to do so.
Cooke noted that not all parents are as technologically literate as their children, making content and ratings information particularly relevant to videogames. He also pointed out that the site contains information about games of all ratings, not just those designed for children.
The new website, www.pbbfc.co.uk, will provide detailed information about the content of kids' films and all BBFC-classified videogames, as well as an explanation as to why the BBFC gave the material a particular rating.

Future US has announced that it will be publishing PlayStation: The Official Magazine under an agreement with SCEA.
The new magazine will debut in November, with former PSM editor-in-chief Rob Smith at the helm.
Future plc currently publishes the Official Sony PlayStation Magazine in the UK and licenses it in other countries. It expects an initial circulation of 300,000 copies, with 13 issues printed each year.
"We're very excited to be working with a group that is nearly as passionate about our brand as we are ourselves and we look forward to working with Future on many innovative ideas they have to create a best in class enthusiast publication," said Peter Dille, SCEA's senior VP of marketing and PlayStation Network.
The original Official PlayStation Magazine was published in the US by Ziff-Davis from September 1997 until January 2007. It was the first gaming magazine to include a demo disk.

Sports Interactive has released a demo for the latest instalment of Football Manager 2008.
Well, two, actually: a dumpy "strawberry" version with all the Euro leagues and logos, or a trimmed "vanilla" offering focused on the UK.
This year Football Manager will be available all around the world and boasts many more tactical bits and pieces to get stuck into.
You can keep up to date with all of these over on the official website, where Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson will be writing weekly blogs to cover the new features.
Or you can always pop into our Football Manager 2008 gamepage to see what we thought when we had a play on it recently.
Football Manager 2008 is due for release later this year, although publisher SEGA has yet to say exactly when.

Metal Gear franchise creator Kojima said at the E3 Media and Business Summit in July that the hotly anticipate PlayStation 3 title Metal Gear Solid 4 would be the last Metal Gear game that he is directly involved with.
But in a recent phone interview with Next Gen, Konami Digital Entertainment's new marketing VP Anthony Crouts said otherwise.
"I'm sure he's never going to let go of Metal Gear Solid-trust me. [Snake's] a big character, so as a franchise I think he'll always hold it near and dear to his heart.
"In one capacity or another, he will always be involved in the Metal Gear franchise."
This wouldn't be the first time that Kojima has said any one Metal Gear game would be his last. The celebrated developer most recently said the same thing about 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3.
The future of Metal Gear's famed protagonist Solid Snake is also in question, as trailers depict a character on the emotional and physical brink.

N'gai Croal reports that Sony will start selling a $40 version of Warhawk in stories later this month. The $40 version, matching the price of the download-only version available on the Playstation Network, won't come with the Jabra Bluetooth packed in that comes with the $60 version of the game.
The $40 version will go on sale starting Oct. 10, according to GamStop, but Sony reps were only able to confirm the price and not the date to Croal. This could be a new pricing strategy for Sony, though I think it would make more sense in the future to release both a bundle and a non-bundle at stores on the same day rather than waiting to start selling the game-only version at stores.

In the meantime, you can see what Sony has done: the company has focused on reducing the cost of building the PS3 while also closely watching how sales of lower-priced units are doing. The time is ripe for a new PS3 model to hit the scene, and we strongly believe that the company is about to launch a $399 PS3 in time for the holiday season. We've been hearing rumors to this effect for some time, but now the evidence of a new PlayStation 3 configuration is almost undeniable: an FCC filing details a new model number for the system.
What this new model number means is impossible to know for sure; the FCC filing leaves out pictures to "avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of the product to the public." The product description tells us that there is no difference in the wireless configuration, CPU, or Bluetooth aspects of this new PlayStation 3. The information that details the differences has been conveniently left out of the released paperwork, for the aforementioned reason.
We also have a date to pin this information to: our sources tell us that the $399 PlayStation 3 hardware will launch on, or before, November 16. We're confident in this information, as our sources in this area have always given us accurate information in the past. The "sensitive information" in the FCC filing will go public 45 days from September 4, unless something changes.

Sony Corp., the world's second-biggest maker of consumer electronics, raised 320 billion yen ($2.8 billion) in its insurance unit's initial public offering, Japan's biggest this year.
A total of 800,000 Sony Financial Holdings Inc. shares were sold at 400,000 yen each, Tokyo-based Sony said today.
Sony sold the shares at the top end of its range, spurring demand by reducing the price from an original reference level of 415,000 yen, after losses in the U.S. subprime-mortgage market triggered a global rout in stocks. Proceeds from the share sale of Sony Financial, the biggest profit contributor after consumer electronics, will help Sony increase production of Bravia televisions and fund the money-losing PlayStation unit.

The value of the computer game market in Japan, at 292.8 billion yen, was 21.7 percent higher in the fiscal first half to September than a year before, largely because of the success of Nintendo Co Ltd's Nintendo DS, magazine publisher Enterbrain said.
Sales of Nintendo's Wii and Sony (NYSE:SNE) Computer Entertainment Inc's PlayStation Portable 3 (PSP3) also helped the market expand, Enterbrain said.
Enterbrain conducted a survey of the market between March 26 and Sept 23.
The hardware market expanded by 33.5 percent to 138.3 billion yen and the software market increased by 12.8 percent to 154.5 billion yen, Enterbrain said in a written statement.
In the hardware market, Nintendo sold 3.478 million Nintendo DSs and Nintendo DS Lites in the fiscal first half and Sony Corp unit Sony Computer Entertainment sold 1.07 million PSP-1000s and PSP-2000s.
In the software market, Nintendo sold 819,237 sets of Mario Party 8 for the Wii and 789,091 sets of one of the series of the Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS, Enterbrain said.
