View Full Version : Hmm That PSone Emulator News

Im sure that many of you who visit other sites in the PSP scene will have no doubt heard or seen the supposed screens of the menu of Sonys Unreleased PSone emulator for the PSP which for those of you who dont know will cost you cash per game and certainly wont be free.
The Price of the games in news articles ive seen points to a $15 dollar but i would say thats a high price or only for the very top of the range PSone games, i would think that a maximum of $10 is much more likely.
As for the emulator itself i reckon they will use a process like Bleemcast did and that is optimize each game for use on the PSP, making full use of the widescreen. How they are going to get around the controls is going to be interesting although its quite conceivable that they could bring out a mini PS2 controller that plugs into the USB port on top of the PSP.
The games if downloadble will use some type of DRM to stop piracy and most likely the emulator will be well hidden away.
Remember that anything you read on sites is pure speculation until Sony divulge details themselves, sure its nice to see screens but if they are indeed fakes then it does rather let you in for a backlash from the members of the PSP scene.
Lets see where the PSP emu from Sony goes. What we really need is a Bleemcast for PSP ;)

Sony wants to wipe homebrew off the face of the earth,
And now start chargeing for emulation.
Well the homebrew scene made emulation what it is, Emulation has its own aire about it, people dont want to have to pay for emulation,
Its Got its own life and feel to it in the homebrew scene already.
I see corporate emulation as a almost humorus move.
And I await its release with bated breath!
For when it does finely come full term The homebrew scene will have the perfect specimine to disect and study.
I applaud sony for there great contribution to the homebrew scene :p weather they know it will be or not lol
And yeah I guess a hack job on this sony brand emulator could be concidered warez, But where does the scene draw the line on whats acceptible as warez and whats not?
Isnt even the tiny bits of code riped from Gta and used for the gta exploit build still takeing somthing from a comercial product?
I dont liek warz in in the whole. But when you got lemons, make lemonaid.
And I would rip this emulator apart and hack it, without the slightest moral hesitation.

Sorry man, but that just doesn't make any sense... Why would Sony not care about emulation? By your logic, they should regularly abandon their IP every few years. Emulation is great for corporations becuase it means that their products will live on forever and be potentially profitable for just as long. It goes hand-in-hand with corporate attitudes. We mustn't forget that out of the big three console makers right now, Sony's the only one that has made backwards compatibility a virtual guarantee in it's systems (other than the remarkable exception of Nintendo's GB/GBA/DS line), and that compatibility is accomplished through emulation. You can just about bet that the biggest reason why the PSP didn't natively support PS1 titles at launch was because of the highly unportable (for gaming, anyway) full size CD format.

But the point im makeing is,
Who has ever wanted to pay for emulation,
look at all the failed attempts for the corprate community to garner money from emulation,
*cough, Gametap.
And the revolution with its emulation plan. Sure people accept it and look foward to it, And why? Because it wont be long before somone figures out how to blow the doors clean off the revolutions firmware and make it free to the point of simply downloading the emulation from another site for free.
People just dont want to pay for somthing they can get for free.
Oh I can planely see why they would be interested in emulation.
Its very popular and potentialy could make a lot of money.
But as long as people can get it for free, no one anywhere is going to pay for it.
Not to mention when sony does release this emulator, It wont be long before the hacked version hits the net for free,
And need I to say, That dcemu has a standing about warez as a whole,
We dont like it here.
But each of us individualy, would seek out this hacked version and play it own our own.
Thats all im getting to. You see,I see your point bro, I really do,
And as much as I respect the corprate scene in the whole, Thay have brought me much comercial joy in videogame form,
But at the same time, The pay to play corprate emulation scen, in all its glory, Is still a torjen horse aimed attack on the homebrew comunity, and people dont see that :(
*I dont mean to ramble on and on, But lets examine some of the apeal of emulation to begin with.
Part of what makes emulation so good, is that its free to begin with,
Can you see anyone seeking out a multitude of the emulated games they play, if that had to pay for them?
Sure people would still pay for and play there favs,
But in the whole. Emulation wouldnt have nearly the apeal to people it does, if people had to pay for it.

True
They wont ever be able to stop people messing around with there releases.
I guess sony just saw it coming and thought "we'l release a PSone emu before they do" the homebrew scene would of made it eventually but wouldnt of charged for it.
but say you own a PSone game why do you have to pay to put it on your PSP since you have already bought it will tweaking it playable on your PSP really cuase that much harm to sony?

lets just say pay to play emulation was widely accepted just for a moment.
If I had to pay even just five dollars a pop for every rom I had
The totaly price I would have to pay would be completly insane.
Even at just five dollars a pop.
However I do take great comfort in the fact that most of the roms I play are either games I own, owned once upon a time. Or couldnt find because they where never released in this country :p
Yeah that sounds a little far fetched I suppose. But you have to take into concideration, That ive been a collector of videogames ever since before I knew the definition of the word collector.
As far back as I can remember, And I can remember to somwhere around the age of 3. Even then. At that time video games had always been somthing I loved, So my memory just doesnt go back far enough to allow me to say ecactly how long Ive followed this hobby :o

Ill never understand why people liked final fantasy 9:p
To me as a die hard ff fan since the begining,
Final fantasy 9 seems to stand out that the most obviously, rushed quick cash in in the enitre series :p
Still takeing away the final fantasy name and just looking at it as an rpg.
Its still better then any other non squaresoft rpg of that time:cool:

Id like to see ff8, energiez, a couple of old capcom games (marvel vs capcom I still play often ;) ), some of the wipe outs, and of course the old syphon filter... god i loved that game back in 5th grade... OH OH AND XENO GEARS! EVERYONE NEEDS XENO GEARS!

Yeah good arcade games like marvel vs capcom will be welcome as PSP doesnt have a high amount of fighters but dont forget how will the PSP emulate the PS1 control missing two buttons (L2 R2) let alone give good control for fighting game i.e. quarter circle moves.
Sony claims to release these games availible on memory sticks (bad move) hackers rejoice.
but yeah for us collectors who have years of collection of games and roms ever since the commodore emulation will add up to a costy price.

i think its pretty evil Sony wanting to charge me for my old PS1 games all over again. Particularly when i would only want the games i've already owned on my PSP. (Tomb Raider games, Tony H 2, maybe slap a version of FIFA on there where Sheffield Wednesday a still Premiership team :D )
i dont care if the downloads are only £1 each, its the principle of the thing. Fact is i already own those games. If i'm having to pay for them again because my original wont work then its not really an emulator... it's a PS1 "simulator" and as such should have lots of enhancements added to the games to tailor specifically to being run on a PSP.
can you imagine if i had to pay for all my old ZX Spectrum and Amiga games all over again to run under emulation??! i have hundreds of the buggers, all legal, 95% of which i still have the boxes for (cluttering up my loft.) what would have ever been the point in paying for them in the first place?
Even if Sony realeased their own ZX Spectrum emulator on a UMD with every speccy game on it (at a massive 48-128k each!) i'd feel like i was being ripped off with a half-empty UMD, a few hundred games i'd never play, and the cost of paying for all those games all over again.
Sony have given us a lovely bit of hardware in the PSP, but since they refuse to provide us with great new software to use on it, i'm gonna stick with the Homebrew scene and just use it as a portable version of all the emulators and stuff i spend my tme running on my PC. Shame really, because there's a lot of untapped potential in that that-there PSP.

sony hates things made for PSP that are free. They want people to have to buy stuff, therefore they made 2.0-2.6versions.

Strange how people are bashing Sony for this....is this not in a roundabout way the same as say a Capcom,Namco or Midway Compillation? They are Charging lets say 29 bucks for 10 or so "old games" that are illegally but freely available on the web. How's come they are not evil? If you have an upgraded PSP and are not privy to the ways of the homebrew...You'd be pretty happy about This. I however am unaffected as I only played the original playstation a couple of times. Never had a PS2. But love my Downgraded 1.5 PSP. I have no problem with sony's move and think it should be applauded. No one's screaming about Nintendo's Revolution doing the same thing...and they will have other systems too. More functionality keeps our beloved handheld going. The more it goes the more we get out of it.

my idea.........
if or when $ony realeses the ps1 emu and charge for the roms, iso,or whatever they use for it the emu will be well encripted so that nobody will be able to hack the emu at least for a few mounths. i say if $ony is going to realese the emu (i hope) they will not charge for the roms or what ever but instead have a software (hack proof if u want to call it that of course) u can download from there site that will enable u to put youre ps1 game that you own in ur dvd drive and use the software to make and modify the iso of the disk (automaticaly) so that it is psp ps1 emu compatible and then move that file over to the psp and run it true the emu. BTW ff7 would kick ass on psp!!!

I guess you have a point there bro.
I mean Final fantasy mystic quest was supposed to be for ff noobs but then that game is pretty old now and probibly doesnt interest a lot of newer gamers.
But yeah, Ive been a ff vet for so long, That somtimes I forget that it would be pretty hard for somone new to final fantasy to just pick up say ff 7 or ff 8 and know what there doing.
I guess every so often to generate new fans As long standing as final fantasy is, Its a good idea to have a few mystic quests and ff 9's in there :p
Good call bro

Ps1 on the psp... If sony releases it, there will surely be a firmware update to play ps1 on the psp. Sony is tryin to jump on the band-wagon with nintendo and there plans of emulating all of there past systems games. If Sony really wanted to slap nintendo in the face, they should allow the ps1 emu to work on all firmwares. Stop updating firmwares. Maybe drop a big loop hole in the next firmware. But sony wouldn't do something like that. No, they will leave there enthusiasts in the dust with firmware updates. Although it would be a jump in the right direction allowing things to just be possible... Bill Gates has people playin nintendo on the xbox360, i dont see him caring. He isn't blocking this stuff with firmware updates. He didn't make the hack, so he's not liable. Sony's problem, they announced emulation before it was released, so they admitted it before and had to fix it later.

Personally I was never big on FF7-X. I just couldn't get into them. I can see why FF8 is the most returned game in the history of japan. Very gorgeous games but it lacked something to me, now I've played FFXII and even though the battle system has changed I really like the story. Anyways if/when this psx emulator gets released I can't wait to start playing Grandia and the Lunar games again. Also Jumping Flash, ZanacXZanac, and the Arc the Lad series would be great to play on the psp. Who knows maybe I'll try FF7 again if it's available for 3245987230987 dollars from the online sony shop.
